Beware! Be very careful when choosing a generator. Many companies who make and/or sell generators do not provide adequate service, do not know their product limits and capabilities, do not keep wear parts on hand and will charge you major for shipping of those wear parts and take days to get them to you.
Being 100% off grid, we need a generator to work properly. In winter, if the sun does not shine for days or during the long nights, we could find ourselves without power. Therefore, no heat or electricity.
We recently (in Nov. 2010, -15 to -20 degrees C.) found ourselves with a generator that would not run properly. We took turns, every couple of hours, to go and start the generator manually. It would not start automatically. We contacted our supplier and the manufacturer to no avail. We also requested a quote for a new generator but the new one had an 11 week delivery time.
We then found another manufacturer and dealer that was very accommodating. We have dealt with the dealer with other products to our satisfaction.
The new generator is an 1800 rpm liquid cooled, 4 cylinder backup generator.
